The question crossword solvers used to ask each other was “Pencil or pen?” Answering “pen,” of course, suggested that you were a real pro.
The question these days, though, is “Paper or electronic?” Paper’s probably still king (no stats exist, so we can’t be sure), but its crown is loosening and will eventually yield to the electronic juggernaut.
The biggest advantage e-solving has is its cheat function, giving the solver a word (or even a single letter) of their choice. Sometimes that’s all you need to crack a puzzle open, but with print it’s tough to sneak a peek at just the letter or word you want without also seeing surrounding entries.
